As Colorado families face growing uncertainty—whether due to economic hardship, community violence, or the emotional toll of instability—the demand for reliable legal assistance remains urgent and deeply human.
In 2023, domestic violence-related deaths in Colorado accounted for approximately 11% of all homicides, with 58 fatalities reported across the state. While general violent crime rates have seen modest declines, calls for help related to domestic abuse continue to rise, revealing a painful reality: home is not always a safe place.
At the national level, the statistics are just as sobering. According to the CDC, 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men in the U.S. will experience physical violence, stalking, or sexual assault by an intimate partner during their lifetime. LGBTQ+ individuals face even greater risks. 61% of bisexual women, 44% of lesbian women, and 26% of gay men report having survived some form of intimate partner violence. Transgender people experience among the highest rates—up to 66% report violence within the home, often compounded by barriers to accessing protection, safety, and justice.
At JAMLAC (Justice and Mercy Legal Aid Center), we respond to these realities not with judgment, but with a legal helping hand. Our work is grounded in the belief that everyone deserves safety, stability, and the chance to rebuild. Through four core programs, we support those who cannot afford legal counsel but who urgently need it:
- Immigration Legal Services, including U-visas, VAWA petitions, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS), citizenship, and family petitions for survivors and vulnerable immigrants;
- Family Law, covering divorce, custody, and protection from abusive situations;
- Older Adult Legal Services, focused on wills, powers of attorney, and planning for safety and dignity in aging;
- And our Pro Bono Legal Program, which leverages the talents of volunteer attorneys to support clients with civil legal issues like protection orders, housing conflicts, and more.
Every case we take on reflects our commitment to walk alongside those facing life-changing legal battles—many of whom would otherwise go unheard.
Whether it’s a mother seeking custody to protect her children, an elder securing their final wishes, or a young LGBTQ+ survivor needing legal protection, we step in with compassion and clarity. We do this because we know that when people understand their rights and can defend their safety within the law, families stabilize, communities heal, and justice becomes more than an ideal—it becomes real.
