Domestic Violence Awareness Month: Raising Awareness, Supporting Survivors, and Connecting Our Community

Oct 1, 2026 | Announcements, Domestic Violence, Events

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM), a time to raise awareness, honor survivors, remember those whose lives have been lost to domestic violence, and connect individuals and families with resources and support.

At JAMLAC, this month holds particular significance. Many of the individuals and families we serve have experienced domestic violence or are navigating situations involving abuse. Through our full legal services, advocacy, and community education, we help eligible clients understand their rights, explore their legal options, and navigate complex legal systems. This may include assistance with protection orders, family law matters, and immigration-related concerns. We recognize that seeking help can be difficult, particularly for individuals facing language barriers, financial hardship, fear, or uncertainty about their legal options. Our commitment is to approach each person with dignity, compassion, and respect while helping them access the legal support they need to move toward safety and stability.

Awareness is important, but access to support can make a difference. Domestic violence can affect people of any background, age, gender, or income level. Building safer communities requires listening to survivors, challenging harmful beliefs, increasing access to resources, and supporting organizations working to prevent abuse.

How you can make a difference

You do not have to be a legal professional or an advocate to help. You can make a difference by learning to recognize warning signs, sharing reliable resources, listening without judgment, respecting survivors’ choices, and supporting organizations that provide services. If someone confides in you, believe them, avoid pressuring them to take actions they are not ready for, and help them connect with qualified support when it is safe to do so.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month is observed every October, but the need for awareness, prevention, and support continues throughout the year. At JAMLAC, we remain committed to helping individuals and families access legal assistance and navigate difficult circumstances with dignity and compassion.

Together, we can help build a community where survivors are supported, resources are accessible, and everyone has the opportunity to live free from abuse.

Safety note: If you or someone you know is experiencing abuse, consider contacting a trained advocate to discuss options and safety planning. If you are in immediate danger, call 911. Use a safe device when searching for resources if you are concerned that your online activity may be monitored.
